Base64 Encode & Decode

Convert text to Base64 and back. Handles UTF-8, emoji, URL-safe Base64 and missing padding; binary results download as a file.

Input type
Direction

Text

Base64

How to use it

  1. 1Choose Encode or Decode.
  2. 2Paste your text or Base64. Decoding accepts URL-safe characters, line breaks and data: URLs.
  3. 3Copy the result. If the decoded data is a file (image, PDF, ZIP), download it instead.

Private by design

Everything runs in this browser tab. Your input is never uploaded, logged or saved on a server, and there are no public "recent" pages. Close the tab and it's gone.

How we keep it private

Examples

Encode text with accents

Text is encoded as UTF-8 first, so non-English characters work.

Input

héllo 👋

Output

aMOpbGxvIPCfkYs=
Decode a Basic auth header value

Base64 is encoding, not encryption: anyone can decode it.

Output

Standard vs URL-safe Base64

Standard Base64 uses + and / and pads with =. URL-safe Base64 (RFC 4648 §5), used in JWTs and many APIs, replaces them with - and _ and usually drops the padding, so the value can sit in a URL or filename unchanged.

The decoder accepts both, so you don’t need to know which one you have.

Frequently asked questions

Why does decoding show "binary data"?

The decoded bytes aren’t valid UTF-8 text, so they are probably a file. The tool guesses the type from the first bytes (PNG, JPEG, PDF, ZIP, …) and lets you download it.

Is Base64 a way to hide passwords?

No. It’s an encoding that anyone can reverse instantly. Credentials in Base64 (like Basic auth) are effectively plain text.

Is my data or file uploaded?

No. Encoding and decoding happen in your browser, including files. Nothing is sent to a server.
