How to use it

  1. 1Paste text, or choose the file you downloaded.
  2. 2Compare the SHA-256 shown at the top with the checksum from the publisher.
  3. 3Switch to Base64 if you need the value for Subresource Integrity or an API signature.

Private by design

Everything runs in this browser tab. Your input is never uploaded, logged or saved on a server, and there are no public "recent" pages. Close the tab and it's gone.

Examples

Empty input

If you see this hash for a file, the file is empty.

Input

(nothing)

Verifying a download

Publishers list a SHA-256 next to installers and ISO images. Hash the file you received and compare: any difference, even one character, means the file is not the one they published.

macOS / Linux: shasum -a 256 file.iso
Windows: certutil -hashfile file.iso SHA256

Frequently asked questions

Is my text or file sent anywhere?

No. Hashes are computed in your browser with the Web Crypto API (MD5 with a small local library). Hashing passwords or keys on a website that sends them to its server would defeat the point.

Can I use these hashes to store passwords?

No. MD5 and SHA are fast by design, which makes password guessing fast too. Store passwords with a slow, salted algorithm such as Argon2id, scrypt or bcrypt.
